English as a Second Language

• McKernan offers an English as a Second Language Program which attracts students from all over the world: Hong Kong, Korea, China, Japan, Ukraine, Poland, the former Yugoslavia, Iran and Iraq, to name a few. 
• Students from other countries who have no English or are just beginning to speak and write in English experience great success at McKernan.  
• We believe that the most effective and meaningful way for students new to Canada to learn about Canadian culture and the English language is to interact with others within the regular school environment.
• ESL students attend age-appropriate classes, and teachers modify the curricular expectations until students gain mastery of the language.
• Depending on a student's needs, he/she may receive small group English instruction for approximately 30 minutes each day, three times a week or as required.
