Each year we recognize the top junior high students in all subjects, both academic and non-academic. We also recognize students who make positive contributions to school life and leadership roles they assume within the school.
Our awards ceremony is usually the last school day of June.
Below is a list of Special Awards that are given out at McKernan School.
Newbell Awards - These awards are given to the top student in each of the four core subjects; English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. These are presented at Grade 7, 8 and 9.
Pat Hogaboam Memorial Scholarship - This award can be presented to any student in grade 7, 8 or 9 and they receive a cheque for $100. The student selected for the Pat Hogaboam Memorial Scholarship must demonstrate the positive spirit and courage true to the Pat Hogaboam tradition; that is, exhibit some or all of the following qualities:
- A good listener
- Supportive and understanding
- Passionate about living life to the fullest
- Courageous in the face of adversity
- Joyful; encourages others with smiles and good humour
- Patient with self and others
- Engenders optimism and courage in others
- Respects the people and property of the McKernanSchool community
- A positive role model.
G.L. Davies Trophy –This award is given to the most outstanding grade 9 student who has earned distinction in academic achievement, athletics, citizenship, extra-curricular activities and leadership.
Sinclair Trophy – This award is given to the grade 9 student who contributes to the school in creative, conscientious, courteous and co-operative ways.
Principal’s Award – This award is given to the grade 9 student who demonstrates outstanding leadership.
